How Homansbyen came to be

The area is named after the brothers Jacob and Henrik Homann, who were behind the villa development.1 Building began in 1858, and until 1866, the architect Georg Andreas Bull designed most of the villas.2

According to Lokalhistoriewiki, plans in the 1960s for a new road, Per Sivles gate, would have meant tearing down villas. The area was designated a conservation zone in 1978.3 According to the Store Norske Leksikon, the later buildings are mostly four- to five-story apartment blocks, with shops and offices along Hegdehaugsveien and Bogstadveien.4
