How Stortorget came to be
According to Lokalhistoriewiki, Norway’s first railway opened between Christiania and Eidsvoll on September 1, 1854, and Lillestrøm grew up along the line.1 Lillestrøm grew up around sawmills after sawmill privileges were abolished in 1860, and by 1870, there were seven large sawmills.2
Lillestrøm was never founded as a trading town, was its own municipality from 1908 to 1962 and received town status on June 13, 1998.3 According to the Store Norske Leksikon, Lillestrøm church, from 1935, has an apse painting by Henrik Sørensen, who grew up in the town.4
