How the ranking is built
Stedsvalg ranks places across Greater Oslo from what you tell it. The same answers always give the same list. No language model takes part in the calculation.
Your requirements come first
Each destination has a maximum travel time. Places over the limit are removed from the list, however good they are otherwise.
The housing budget is not a hard filter. Area prices are averages for sold homes where there are enough sales, and not listing prices. Outside Oslo they are often a modelled estimate from SSB, scaled to the municipality’s sales, and then they are labelled “modelled”. Places get a label instead, such as “Typically within budget” or “Unlikely at the stated size”.
Sixteen measures for every area
Each measure is scored from 0 to 100. In practice the scale stops at 98, because the sources cannot document a perfect area.
- Quiet from road and rail noise
- Forest and large natural areas
- Parks and green space nearby
- Proximity to the fjord
- Lakes and rivers
- Food and cafés within walking distance
- Public transport within walking distance
- Proximity to everyday amenities
- Children’s everyday life
- Housing affordability
- Perceived safety (sub-district in Oslo, municipality figure in Akershus)
- Age of the buildings
- Housing form
- Investment potential
- Comfortable walking
- Comfortable cycling
Building age and housing form have no right direction. They count only if you say you want older or newer, or detached homes or dense housing.
You set the weights
You choose how much each measure matters. The ranking is a weighted average of the measures and the travel time. Measures you have not weighted change nothing. The final score is rounded to a whole number.
How travel time is counted
Travel time comes from Entur’s journey planner. Each transfer counts as 10 extra minutes, and walking counts in full. A trip with one transfer and 30 minutes on board is treated as 40 minutes.
On the destination guide pages the times are fetched ahead for an ordinary weekday, arriving at 8.30 am. The date is shown on each page.
The map is made of cells
Oslo is split into 321 cells of 750 by 750 metres and the covered Akershus municipalities into 805. On the place pages the cells are merged and weighted by population.
What the numbers do not say
Area figures are rough estimates. A quiet cell can contain a noisy street, and an expensive one can contain affordable homes. Prices are averages for sold homes or modelled estimates, and not individual listings.
Use Stedsvalg to decide where to look. Check the home and the address itself before you decide. Nothing on the site is financial advice.
