How Ensjø came to be
The Ensjø brickworks ran from 1852 to 1916, and the area was long one of the city’s industrial districts.1 Ensjø was long nicknamed “the car city” because of its many car dealerships.2
Ensjøbyen is a redevelopment of up to 7,000 new homes. Planning began in 2004 and is due to finish around 2030.3 The Hovinbekken stream has been reopened and runs through much of Ensjø. The parks are built in stages, and Petersborgparken was finished in summer 2020.4
Oslo municipality is planning new primary and lower-secondary schools in Grenseveien, due to be finished in 2029.5 In June 2026 Oslo city council approved the zoning plan for NRK’s new headquarters at Normannsløkka. Construction is planned to start in 2026, with move-in planned for 2029.6 According to Wikipedia, Ensjø station opened in 1966 and is served by three metro lines: Østensjø, Lambertseter and Furuset.7
