How Etterstad came to be

The name comes from Old Norse Eitilsstaðir, made up of the man’s name Eitill and the word for place.1 Etterstadsletta was an army parade ground from 1795 to 1881, and in 1910, the Swedish aviator Carl Cederström gave flight demonstrations here.2

OBOS put up its first building on Etterstad in 1931, and from around 1950, the plain was built out with apartment blocks and high-rises. Terrace housing was added in the 1980s.3
