How Rodeløkka came to be

Rodeløkka is named after the dean Frederik Rode, who acquired land here in 1854. For a time the place was also called Vågeby.1 Most of the wooden houses were built in the 1860s and 1870s, before the area became part of Christiania in 1878.2

According to the Store Norske Leksikon, the wooden buildings, 137 properties, were designated a conservation area in 1988.3 According to Lokalhistoriewiki, more than half of the early residents were building tradesmen or workers who could build their own homes, and many took their houses apart and moved them.4
