How Sinsen came to be

According to the Store Norske Leksikon, the name comes from Old Norse Sinnsin, probably meaning the meadow by the road.1 Sinsenbyen was zoned and built in 1934–1939 with 45 slab blocks, spaced at least 25 meters apart so most apartments would get sunlight.2

The 2,550 apartments include about 1,000 one-room, 1,000 two-room and 500 three-room units, and the project was Norway’s largest private rental development.3
